Our client was admitted to a St. Lucie County hospital due to a severely fractured arm that required open surgery. Although laboratory testing of her blood revealed that she had a potassium deficiency, and there was a hospital policy and protocol for replacement, it was not followed. The hospital policy also required more blood testing to determine if there were other deficiencies, but that was also not followed. As a result, our client suffered a cardiac arrest caused by low potassium and magnesium that resulted in a lack of blood flow to her brain, and significant brain damage. The case was extremely difficult due to evidence that the client failed on prior occasions to follow her own physician’s advice that she address her poor electrolytes and obtain a full cardiac work-up before the cardiac event that happened at the hospital.
